NEEDLE PLAY IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CASUAL PLAY. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR PARTNER'S MEDICAL HISTORY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FORM OF EDGE PLAY.
Play Piercing and Play Stapling is a temporary form of Body Modification. Body Modification is the deliberate altering of the human body for non-medical (usually artistic or aesthetic) reasons. Surgical Stapling Stapling is not as painful and is less invasive than needle playand is a significantly safer form of play piercing with casual partners.
Skin stapling is more versatile and can be worn on the body for much longer periods of time. Although, somewhat safer, you still have to take precautions when engaging in this type of play.
Staples: There are many types of surgical staplers on the market. Some are very expensive stainless steel models, but you'd need the equipment to sterilize it. We use inexpensive disposable medical staple guns. They come 35 staples to a gun. The guns are sterile even after use. In other words, you can go from one person to the next and the staples are still sterile.
Staple Remover: This is imperative. The staples are designed to hold wounds together while healing. They do not come out easily. It's probably a good idea to have an extra remover in case you lose one. Sanitary Supplies: Alcohol prep wipes are recommended for cleaning the area before applying and after removing staples. Sterile cotton balls soaked in alcohol work just as well. Iodine can be used to prep the area, but there are allergy concerns for some people and it can ruin the aesthetics of a scene. Topical antibiotic ointment applied after removal of staples is recommended.
Play Piercing: Play Piercing is the temporary insertion of sterile needles just under the surface of the skin. This is without a doubt the fastest route to that endorphin rush that masochists seek. Please use caution. Unless you trust the person with your life, sterile latex gloves should be worn while inserting needles or applying staples. Needles: We generally use 18-22 gauge needles, but you can use any size. Smaller doesn't necessarily mean less painful. Acupuncture needles may also be used.
Sanitary Supplies:
Alcohol prep wipes are recommended for cleaning the area before and after needles insertion, but sterile cotton balls soaked in alcohol work just as well. Iodine can be used to prep the area, but there are allergy concerns for some people and it can ruin the aesthetics of a scene.
Capping the sharp points is necessary if the needles are to be worn for any length of time. Cork cut into small pieces works well. We sell needle cappers and hatpin clutches on this site for decoratie and safety purposes.
Topical antibiotic ointment applied after removal of needles is recommended.
Absorbent material, preferably sanitary, to soak up blood
Safety Procedures For Needle and Staple Play:
Make sure skin is clean prior to insertion of needles. Avoid organs, bones and major arteries. If you flunked anatomy, go for meaty areas like breasts, legs, arms, back and buttocks.
DO NOT RE-USE NEEDLES! Not even on the same person.
If the top accidently sticks themselves with a needle that is already inserted in the bottom, precautions should be taken. Cutting the base off the needle with a pair of wire cutters and then pulling the needle out using hemostats so the contaminated point is not drawn back through the bottom's body. If you are going to withdraw the needle the same way it was inserted, at least partially disinfect the tip with lots of alcohol and providone-iodine and let it stay wet at least ten minutes. If the top was pierced to the point of drawing blood, it might help to deliberately induce bleeding to wash out the wound and apply alcohol and/or betadine.
Aspirin and other analgesics/pain killers can thin the blood and/or interfere with blood clotting. If these medications have been taken with the last few days, uncontrolled bleeding may result. People with hemophilia or other conditions which affect blood clotting are at risk of uncontrolled bleeding. Change gloves before proceeding.
Almost any disease can be transmitted by blood, including many you might not think about because they aren't considered STDs. Some of these diseases can be fatal, incurable, and debilitating.
Chemical sterilizers such as alcohol, providone iodine, and maybe hydrogen peroxide will neutralize HIV in about 20 minutes of exposure. Even exposure to air can kill HIV but body fluids may protect the virus.
If you use floggers or other toys on an area of skin that has been exposed to blood, you can contaminate your toys. You can not adequately sterilize leather floggers.
Aspirin and other NSAIDS can thin the blood and/or interfere with blood clotting. If these medications have been taken with the last few days, uncontrolled bleeding can result. People with hemophilia or other conditions which effect blood clotting are at risk of uncontrolled bleeding.
Used needles should be disposed of in a "sharps container" (available at most drug stores). You can dispose of a sharps container at many drug stores, needle exchanges, or hospitals; these places should have a no questions asked policy. Gauze, prep pads, wipes, gloves, and other contaminated materials should be disposed of properly. If no sharps containers are available a plastic soda bottle (mark it well, please) may be used.
Have a supply of absorbent material handy to soak up blood. Do not use non-sterile material directly over areas which have been or will be pierced.
Clean the pierced area and any area of skin which has come in contact with blood thoroughly with alcohol and betadine afterwards. Cleaning with lots of water may also help dilute pathogens.
It is not at all uncommon for people to have an emotional crash the day after the piercing. This is the low that follows the high. The bottom may need additional aftercare at this point and might not be able to function normally (such as at work) during the crash. The bottom should be warned about this in advance.
If you are into licking blood (vampirism), there is a significant risk of the person licking catching a blood borne disease. There is also some risk of infecting the bottom. THIS IS HIGH RISK BEHAVIOR!
Brushing your teeth (or even worse, flossing) within four hours before play or shortly after play increases the risk of open cuts in the mouth. Any other sores, lesions, or cuts in the mouth increase risk. Swishing strong alcohol around in the mouth before and after exposure may reduce the possibility of transmission of diseases. Chloraseptic sore throat spray could also help. The combination of alcohol and phenol (the active ingredient in Chlorseptic) is more effective than either alone. Swishing water around in your mouth and spitting it out could also reduce the risk.
Having the blood "donor" tested for HBV, HCV, and HIV prior to play would reduce risk. Being immunized against HBV beforehand is a good idea. Engaging in this kind of play only with people whose sexual, drug use, and medical history are known and with whom you are fluid bonded is a good precaution. Even with all of these precautions, this is high risk behavior.
The hollow center of hypodermic needles can harbor blood and pathogens.
Many dungeons have rules prohibiting or governing play piercing. Ask before you proceed to avoid trouble.
Many people have latex allergies (or allergies to chemicals or donning powders used on latex). If this is the case, nyplex or vinyl gloves may be used.
